Bicyclists gather for a Pomona-Claremont CicLAvia test ride!

Geico and feminine Fred Flinstone, ready to ride

This past weekend, community members gathered to ride the proposed Pomona CicLAvia route and enjoy a beautiful Sunday morning together. The ride was a success and attracted over 40 visitors, with riders coming from as far as Lynwood, Long Beach, Fontana and Redlands to attend. Riders met in Claremont near the Metrolink station, some showed up in full costume while others showed up with just one crucial element, their bikes! And of course, music too.

The CicLAvia exploratory ride took a pit stop at Martin Luther King Park, where riders were given the option to take a survey about the proposed route and enjoy some snacks. Afterwards, the ride worked it’s way back up to Claremont and ended conveniently at the Claremont Farmers Market.

If you missed it or want to complete a survey about the proposed route, you can access it here. Pomona CicLAvia organizers are in the process of compiling the results of the survey. They will incorporate the responses as they continue planning a regional CicLAvia in Pomona and CicLAvia that will serve residents of the San Gabriel Valley and San Bernardino residents as well as the larger Southern California region. Needless to say, people are pretty enthused about the idea of bring a CicLAvia to the region. One rider from the exploratory ride went as far as to compile the following video of Sunday’s ride (see below), Enjoy!

You can volunteer in Pomona’s upcoming bike count!

Volunteer in Pomona’s first bike count!

Numbers are great. They are loaded with tons of potential information and can make a great impact in spurring infrastructure changes.  That’s why at PVBC, we are happy that the City of Pomona will begin conducting its first Bike Count with the help of the Department of Public Health. A bike count will help the city prioritize allocating funds on streets that are already serving bicyclists and pedestrians, to make improvements in those areas. PVBC has taken up the task to recruit volunteers interested in helping get accurate and reliable numbers. We can use all the volunteers we can get!

There will be 7 intersection locations throughout the City with 3 counts at each spot. One count will be on a weekday morning for morning commuters and second will be in the evening for night commuters. The last count will be on a weekend to catch recreational riders. Below are the exact locations and dates. Volunteers must complete a training session before the count to get the materials and a breakdown on how to count at the intersections. Please help us make Pomona and the region a more bike and walk friendly place to be by volunteering at the bike count.

You can find more information on the Facebook event page here and you can sign up to volunteer here.

Upcoming Bike-in movie screening at Palomares Park

On Saturday, August 25th the Pomona Valley Bicycle Coalition will be hosting a Bike-in movie screening at Palomares Park in Pomona. What’s a bike-in you ask? It’s similar to a movie drive-in, but only better because it’s with bicycles. We will be screening To Live and Ride in L.A., a documentary about the bicycling culture of L.A. and the Southern California region. This event will last from 6:00 to 10:00 pm.

Admission to the movie and event is free but be sure to bring some money to buy snacks. The Pomona Pony Baseball & Softball Youth League will be serving hot dogs, nachos, and coffee. Free bike repair will be available courtesy of One More Move. Come enjoy a night at the park and a chance to meet  local bicycling and community groups.  Thinking of getting a few friends together for the event? Feel free to invite them via the Facebook event.
