Welcome to Bike Month!

The Pomona Valley Bicycle Coalition is busy planning exciting events in May for Bike Month and we want you to be part of them!

Bike Month is the perfect time to encourage (or challenge) a friend who doesn’t usually ride a bike to hop on and go for a ride.

I’m sure we all know someone who has a bike collecting dust, let’s get them to ride in May! Maybe all they’re waiting for is someone to ride with, that someone could be you!

Looking for group rides? Try searching on Meetup.com – there are lots of cycling groups in our area who offer everything from beginner to advanced rides, just try searching for “cycling” in your area – or just get a few friends together and go for a ride.

Ride Around Pomona: May 7th and every first Saturday of the Month, family friendly bicycle ride. Meet at Thomas Plaza (Officer Shaun Diamond Plaza) downtown Pomona at 8:30am. Event on Facebook

We’ll be posting about our Bike to Work Day Pit Stop (Thursday, May 19th), Handlebar Happy Hour (also May 19th), Safe routes to School workshop (May 21st), Spring Social (May 21st) and more soon!

In the mean time check out these Bike Month links and tell a friend

PVBC helps lead the Bicycle Revolution

If you haven’t heard, there’s a class being offered at Harvey Mudd College called Bicycle Revolution, in which students ride to surrounding communities and explore the challenges and successes of creating bike-friendly cities.

Last Friday the Pomona Valley Bicycle Coalition had the pleasure of leading the Bicycle Revolution class from the Claremont Colleges down to Pomona. John Trendler of PVBC lead Professor Paul Steinberg and students west along Bonita, down Cambridge, across Vassar, down San Antonio and across 1st street where they met for discussion at Diamond Plaza (once known as Thomas Plaza).

The class was treated to engaging conversations about cycling in Pomona with Brad Johnson of the City of Pomona’s Development & Neighborhood Services Department, Officer Eric Hamilton of the Pomona Police Department who serves as the Bicycle Patrol Coordinator, Shelby Rusu of Western University of Health Sciences, local cyclist Francis Casteneda of Go Getter Delivery, Corey McCroskey of Coates Cyclery, and John from PVBC. After some question and answer time it was rime to get back in the saddle. On the return trip the class pedaled up Palomares St. and past Lincoln Park before cutting across San Bernadino Ave and up San Antonio.

It was a great day & we at PVBC look forward to working with educators, organizations and the public to help make cycling safer and more enjoyable in our region, thanks Professor Steinberg for the opportunity!

Operation Firefly: January 14th

“Operation Firefly” (Operacíon Luciérnaga) is an education and bike light distribution program intended to make sure people riding bikes in Los Angeles are riding safely at night.
Our goal is to seek out people riding without lights for various reasons, especially riders who may not have the means or time to acquire lights on their own, and provide them with front (white) and back (red) bike lights.

Join us Thursday, January 14th in Azusa, just before sun down, to help distribute lights – location and more details will be sent to volunteers. Send us a message at pvalleybikes@gmail.com to volunteer!
